Battlestar Galactica (BSG) is an immensely popular franchise of television series and sci-fi films, the first of which aired in 1978. Books, comic books, and video games followed. In Battlestar Galactica, The Twelve Colonies - a civilization of human beings in a far-off sector of the universe - are at war with the cybernetic Cylons. The Cylons lay waste to The Colonies, decimating their worlds and populations, and the survivors flee aboard any spacecraft they can find, including the Battlestar Galactica, the only military ship in the Colonial Fleet to survive the Cylon attack. This is an original poster for the Australian release of Mission Galactica: The Cylon Attack in 1978. Many of the original episodes of Battlestar Galactica were paired together to form feature films for overseas release. This is a poster from one such release.

Notes:

Between 1978 and 1980, episodes were edited into three feature length films. The first film, Battlestar Galactica, was an edited version of the pilot "Saga of a Star World", featuring some differences from the original televised episodes, including the death of Baltar. It was released in cinemas in Canada, Australia and Europe before its American TV premiere and, in 1979, it was released theatrically in the US. The second film, Mission Galactica: The Cylon Attack, was a re-edited version of the episodes "The Living Legend" and "Fire in Space", which also differed from the broadcast versions, omitting several scenes from both episodes. In 1979, it was released theatrically in Europe and Japan. The third film, Conquest of the Earth, was a similar edit, though this time its source episodes were from Galactica 1980. It was also released theatrically, in 1981, in Europe and Australia.

The comic book Battlestar Galactica, based on the ABC television series of the same name, was published monthly by Marvel Comics from 1978 through 1980, and lasted 23 issues.

Although there were other attempts to adapt Battlestar Galactica into a comic book format, the Marvel series is considered by many to have been the most successful in terms of run, sales, and content.

This was accomplished against some notable odds. Although Roger McKenzie was most often the writer, and Walt Simonson the most regular artist, the book also had a heavy rotation of guest writers and artists.

Marvel Comics’ began its adaptation of Battlestar Galactica with Super Special #8, a magazine format comic released as a tie-in to the start of the series. Based on an early script of the three hour series premiere "Saga of a Star World", this adaptation, which gave a relatively short treatment to the third hour, was also released in a tabloid format and then later as a paperback as well. The tabloid version was also printed by Whitman Comics. Its success led Marvel to print a regular monthly comic depicting the adventures of the ragtag fleet.

Scripted by McKenzie and drawn by Ernie Colon, the Battlestar Galactica Super Special is an attractive adaptation with unusual panel design and use of shadow. n particular, the attack on Caprica, the psychic starting point of the series, is treated in a vivid and memorable way.

When the regular run of Marvel's Battlestar Galactica comic book began some months later, the Super Special adaptation was expanded by several pages, and provided the material for the first three issues of the comic.
